Research
Abbey Medical Practice is now participating in research studies working with NIHR Research Delivery Network and Clincial Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). We have decided to participate in this as it shows our commitment to good quality care and how this might be improved. Dr Kate Hughes, our Clinical Lead for Research, has undertaking the Good Clinical Practice training hosted by NIHR and RCGP training.
Clinical research helps to learn more about illnesses and people's health. It can help find the best type of treatment for a disease or illness. We are asking our patients to take part in certain studies as it could help find the best ways to make people's health better.
There are lots of different types of research that patients can become involved in. At the moment we are a Level 1 Practice and requesting questionairres to be completed for those appropriate to the study, taking part in interviews, donating blood or undertaking online courses to manage your health.
The Practice will identify patients appropriate to the study and send a text message asking if they wish to participate. This is completely optional and it is your decision whether to take part or not. You let us know if you do not wish to take part and we code your medical record to ensure you are not contacted again.
Any research we participate in will have been approved by an independent ethics committe, who ensure any patient information is used ethically and appropriately.
Once consent has been obtained, CPRD will extract anonymised patient data about diagnoses, treatment, referrals, results and demographics. Researchers will never know the identify of patients. Each patient is assigned a unqiue code that only the practice is able to decode to enable us to approach patients about the participation in these trials.
